First Ever Women's MTB Summit

Thursday, September 14, 2017

The first NEMBA Women’s Mountain Bike Summit was held in East Burke, VT August 11 - 13.

Inspired by the growth in women’s mountain biking, NEMBA Board member Paula Burton felt that women needed their own venue to talk about the growth and direction of mountain biking and leadership. With planning over the next several months and input from many volunteers, a group of almost 200 women gathered to learn, collaborate, mentor, and share experiences for a weekend at Kingdom Trails. Riding was of course at the very top of the list, with skills clinics, led rides at all skill levels and distances, a scavenger hunt, and fun bike games.

The weekend was about pushing limits, sharing experiences and expertise, encouragement, and camaraderie. Women from all over New England were welcomed on Saturday morning with a hearty breakfast, served at the Burke Mountain Hotel and Conference Center. Two sessions of breakout topics filled the remainder of Saturday morning, with topics ranging from getting more women involved in mountain biking, sponsorship and industry ambassadors, racing, trailside repairs, camps and kids, and taking your ride to the next level. After lunch, rides and skills clinics were followed by a fun afternoon of activities, and an evening that included a pre-dinner fashion show with a runway of stars modeling the latest in women’s cycling gear that was donated by our sponsors (and later raffled off)!

After Sunday’s breakfast, Lil Ide, Events and Marketing Manager at Kingdom Trails made a presentation about the KT trails, pointing out that most of the trails are built on privately owned land and managed by the non-profit organization Kingdom Trails Association. The remainder of the day could be enjoyed by attending a morning session and joining a led ride or skills clinic in the afternoon.

Thanks and appreciation to the many supporters and sponsors who helped to make the weekend special. Through their generosity, over $1,000 was raised in raffle tickets which will help sponsor young girls to attend mountain bike camp.
